Dinner Before a Show

WHERE TO EAT BEFORE A COMEDY SHOW IN NYC

Dinner and a show — it’s a time-honored tradition. So in honor of the New York Comedy Festival, running from Nov. 6-10, we’ve chosen five of our favorite comedy venues and found the best places for a meal nearby. Just because it’s an evening of comedy doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take your restaurants seriously!

Comedy Cellar: Tertulia
Just around the corner from this West Village comedy club is the fabulous Spanish restaurant Tertulia, with an elegant but rough-hewn rustic charm, where you can dine on Spanish wines and tapas at the bar for a light meal, or a hearty paella if you’re looking for something more substantial. 359 6th Ave., 646-559-9909,‎ tertulianyc.com

Upright Citizens Brigade: Co.
The stretch of north Chelsea that U.C.B. calls home isn’t much to look at, but journey one avenue west and you’ll find some of the city’s best pizza. Co. is the creation of legendary bread baker Jim Lahey, so you know he’s a guy that knows crust. 230 9th Ave., 212-243-1105, co-pane.com

The Stand: Maialino
Not far from The Stand on Third Avenue is Maialino, the excellent Italian restaurant from renowned restaurateur Danny Meyer and chef Nick Anderer. Expect masterful pastas, salumi and antipasti. 2 Lexington Ave., 212-777-2410, ‪maialinonyc.com‎

Gotham Comedy Club: Fishtag
Chef Michael Psilakis has spent much of his career on the Upper West Side, and his Greek-inflected seafood restaurant Fishtag is a good choice for diners of all sorts; choose from one of his elegantly composed plates, or opt to have any fish on the menu simply grilled before or after a show at Gotham. 222 W. 79th St., 212-362-7470, fishtagrestaurant.com

Carolines on Broadway: Don Antonio
The Theater District is chock-full of overpriced, underwhelming eateries, but Don Antonio is an exception: a pizzeria from a Neapolitan legend, with beautifully puffy-crusted pies in a dizzying variety of toppings. There’s plenty of antipasti, wines, and desserts, too, should you want a full meal before a show at Carolines. 309 W. 50th St., 646-719-1043, ‪donantoniopizza.com‎
